About San Pedro City

Site of the main campus, University of Costa Rica

San Pedro, the capital of the Cantón de Montes de Oca in San José, concentrates a number of institutions of higher education, including the University of Costa Rica and different private institutions, creating the perfect environment for the intellectual class to flourish. As a kind of university town, San Pedro is the center of academic research, political debate, and artistic creation. Its night life is legendary thanks to the amount of cafés, bars, nightclubs and restaurants available for visitors. Its infamous “Calle de la Amargura,” a street full of bars that leads to the University of Costa Rica, is the source of entertainment for most college students, but it is also the source of conflict among the general public, due to frequent partying. Nonetheless, students also visit this street to have lunch, have a cup of coffee, photocopy materials, buy office supplies, and socialize with other students.

Transportation to San Pedro:

Ciudad de la Investigación is located in San Pedro, San José, near to UCR’s main campus. Transportation options from Juan Santamaría Airport to Ciudad de la Investigación by road are varied and prices are affordable. Be advised that the easiest way to get to San Pedro from the airport is by taxi, especially because airport buses do not offer direct transportation to San Pedro.

By bus:
TUASA buses offer affordable public transportation to San José and Juan Santamaría Airport every day from 4:00h to 21:00h, every 10 minutes. The bus stop is located next to the main entrance of the airport. Each way costs C535. Note that these buses only reach San José downtown. Once there, you will have to take a taxi to San Pedro.

By taxi:
This is certainly the easiest way to reach San Pedro from the airport, especially because TUASA buses do not go directly to San Pedro, and because they do not offer special racks for luggage. Costa Rican taxis are identified by their red or orange colors. They are available 24 hours at Juan Santamaría Airport. Ask the driver to set the “Maria” (taximeter). The approximate cost from the airport to San Pedro (and vice-versa) is $32. For further information visit the airport´s web page www.aeris.cr
